POSITION: Registered Nurse

LOCATION: Bluebell Nursing Home, Portsmouth, PO4 0PP

RESPONSIBLE TO: Matron/Manager/Directors 

PURPOSE: To provide the highest standard of nursing care to residents

The Registered nurse is part of the Nursing Staff and provides the highest standard of nursing care for each resident in a warm, caring and professional atmosphere. The Nurse in charge must also ensure that the nursing services for all residents is professional, effective and makes optimum use of the resources available. Finally, the Registered Nurse must uphold and enhance the reputation of the Home.

Responsibilities

  • To work independently but also collaboratively with all team members to ensure the highest possible standard of residents’ care.
  • To implement, evaluate and embed electronic-based person-centred care plans for all residents ensuring risks and needs of the residents are managed accordingly.
  • Excellent knowledge of the National Standards and NMC code of practice.
  • To provide the highest standards of resident care and ensure that the care
  • Delivered complies with the recognised standards of nursing practice.
  • To ensure all duties are carried out in accordance with the Policies and Procedures, reporting to the Matron all aspects of Nursing Care, and the effects of the implementation of nursing policies.
  • To review, evaluate and update care plans appropriately and regularly
  • To help residents with problems of mobility and physical disabilities (e.g. incontinence),helping with the use of disability aids and caring for the same, where appropriate
  • To manage risk assessment, and implement management
  • To ensure doctor’s instructions are carried in a timely manner and efficiently.
  • To exercise due care in relation to Controlled Drugs, record correctly their administration and storage.
  • To ensure an accurate and legal account is kept for each service user of all treatments, drugs and instructions.
  • To ensure the correct order of priorities when considering residents care allocation of tasks to any other member of the team, paying due attention to service users needs and individuals abilities.
  • To maintain an efficient reporting system and ensure all relevant information is communicated to the Nurse in Charge at “hand over”.
  • To ensure that any accidents and incidents are recorded and reported to the appropriate authority either immediately or as instructed by law (see RIDDOR, Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous occurrences Regulations).
  • To ensure all staff are familiar with procedures and policies and attend Fire and Evacuation, and Health and Safety at Work mandatory lectures.
  • To communicate courteously and helpfully with service users, relatives and visitors, face to face or by telephone as required. To offer compassion and support in stressful situations.
  • To use correct channels of communication when dealing with problems with other services e.g. Catering, housekeeping or any health, safety and fire hazards.
  • To contact Doctors when a visit is required or to discuss a residents needs and treatment.
  • To liaise with other professionals in the community e.g. Physiotherapists, chiropodists and opticians when required for service users care.
  • To organise the transfer of Service users to the hospital for specialized treatment ensuring all necessary documentation accompanies the service user and the Administration Office is notified.
  • To act up for Manager as required. To report any incidents which occur and the action taken. To liaise with the Manager or Head of Care on-call “out of hours” if necessary.
  • To maintain regular contact with the Matron and ensure instructions are carried out.
  • To take steps to understand the functions and systems of other departments and to work with them to promote a good efficient service for the benefit of service users.
  • To assist the Matron by example where relevant.
  • In maintaining good staff morale.
  • In maintaining discipline and high standards.
  • In developing the interests and skills of new staff.
  • In respecting the varying needs and capacities of others.
  • In guiding and leading new staff by advice and direction.
  • By reporting any problems with staff members.
  • To ensure Bank/Agency staff is aware and understand the necessary procedures in an emergency.
  • To participate in training programmes as directed, including Fire Training sessions and Health and Safety.
  • To maintain your own professional competence.
  • To provide clinical experience for education programmes and develop skilled nursing techniques in new staff.
  • To ensure all care assistants are competent in basic Nursing Skills.
  • To carry out any other function with the jobholder’s general range of capabilities as requested.
  • To attend external and internal training courses.
  • To manage and amend all care plans paper and on Digital Care Assistant.
  • To provide occasional night shift duty where needed.
  • To carry out ‘handover’ at shift change ensuring all relevant information is passed over within the team.
  • To manage individual residents nursing procures as highlighted by care plans i.e. wound care.
  • To inform next of kin of any changes to their health or wellbeing.
  • To ensure allocations are done and remember the skill set for that particular day.

Experience / Skills

  • Preferably nursing home experience
  • NMC pin
  • Knowledge of MCA, DOL’s

Full-time Permanent

Salary:

£18.30ph Monday – Friday day shift and £18.60ph weekend day shift
