Five Questions With… ISABELLA NASIMIYU A GREENWICH CARER

1. WHAT DO YOU LOVE BEST ABOUT YOUR JOB AS A CARER?

Answer:

I love the Interaction with the service users. You get to meet different people from different cultures, different religions and customs. The experience you gain from people from different backgrounds, who you will not meet in your regular circle is priceless. Learning about their lives and their various professions, is also interesting. I had the chance to interact with a service user who was a dressmaker to the Queen’s mother. Another was a missile maker. These are people you definitely won’t meet in your usual circle.

Q2. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING AS A CARER?

Answer:

Being a carer is a lifestyle not just a title. I have always been a caregiver from a young age; professionally, over 20 years.

3. WHAT CHANGES WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE IN THE CARE SECTOR?

Answer:

I would like to see more people who actually care, working in the care sector. Money is good to have but it shouldn’t be the motive for coming into care. It is only a compensation for the service you offer. If money is the motive, you won’t be able to genuinely care for the service users. The currency you get paid in this sector is not just money.

Q4. WHAT TIPS WOULD YOU GIVE OTHER CARERS?

Answer:

  • Respect yourself and make yourself an asset.
  • Don’t stop learning, keep up with your training and ask questions.
  • Be patient and understanding with your service users.
  • Equip yourself with relevant information and stay up to date.

Q4. WHAT TIPS WOULD YOU GIVE OTHER CARERS?

Answer:

This is the day that the Lord has made, rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalm 118:24).

“Have an attitude of gratitude.”

I am inspired by Nelson Mandela because he loved.
people and despite all he went through he was never bitter.
